saw this at the beginning of an extremely long survey that wasn't nearly as interesting as this first bit - thought I'd keep it simple. I ended up choosing kind of odd love-related songs, just kind of happened. haha.

Survey the First - Home Town Survey

Here's the first survey along with my answers. Feel free to copy and paste or just answer in the comments. Or don't answer at all. It is an experiment after all.

(Just so you know, this survey is a little selfish of me. I've been thinking about this stuff lately and I really just want an idea of how other people feel about it.)

1. Did you spend your childhood in one town or move around a lot? Where was it?
Yes. Huntingtown

2. Have you lived in the same house your entire life (ie: your parents have never moved)?
Yes.

3. How attached are you to the place where you grew up?
Very attached. I like almost everything about it.

4. Do you still talk to friends you made in Elementary School? Middle? High School?
Most of my friends from home I've known since birth, but I still talk to my best friend from 5-12 grade on a regular basis.

5. Are you where you thought you would be 10 years ago? 5 years ago? 1 year ago?
10 yrs? no. 5yrs? no. 1 year? yes.

6. Is there any place you feel you could NEVER live?
Idaho is one of the places I have felt that way about, although my feelings on the subject are changing.

7. Do you find yourself more attached to the place you live now than the place you grew up?
I'll answer this for Utah. No. I am an east coast girl. Always will be.

8. Would you move to a place solely to remain close to your family?
Apparently.

9. Are you happy staying in one place for long periods of time?
Come to find out, not at all. I'm a mover (but I hate moving, go figure).

10. What is your favorite thing about the place you grew up? Where you live now?
I love that it is close to the city but still rural. It's the best of both worlds.

Interactive Blogging - Stage 2

So, I've set polls in place. They won't be open as long as they say they will since I want to get some more questions answered via polls. So be on the lookout for new, fun questions!

Now, for Stage 2 of this little experiment. Well, it's technically Stage 3 because I started Stage 2 with my previous post but I'll just go ahead and explain them both.

Stage 2 - I want to try and include more "real-time" photos on my blog. I always get a little sad and think, "I need to TRAVEL somewhere or have an activity so I'll have a new batch of pictures to share on my blog!" But really, my life is always busy busy busy...so why not take pictures of things I am doing RIGHT NOW? I'm pretty sure this new aspect of my blogging will rock your world. Seriously. Maybe you should all invest in helmets for safety purposes.

Now. Stage 3 - Ever wonder where those surveys and memes come from? Who on earth thought up those questions? Why did they take the time? Do people really want to know what color pants I'm wearing right now and whether or not they have pockets? I'm pretty sure the answer is no because what if you aren't wearing ANY pants? I don't want that idea going through my head all day.

So basically we all take part in those things when we are bored or out of some sense of obligation. We all know this is true. Now that we've acknowledged and embraced this fact, let's move on.

I think about a lot of things. I ask the people around me for opinions and I have even been known to blog about them to try and sort things out. But, I'm going to do a series of survey type thingies this week in an effort to answer some of the questions I've been thinking about AND to get all of you involved! Doesn't that sound like great fun!?! I know it's really a vicious circle I'm starting because most of you will answer these surveys because you are bored and/or feel obligated, but I don't care. All I can do is promise I won't be asking you where your cell phone is sitting right now or what color your toothbrush is. These will hopefully be a little more insightful.

AND! Maybe you will all get to know each other better as well! Won't THAT be fun?!** Yes. It will. So, the first survey should be posted by the end of the day. I'm planning a three-part photo survey that should be interesting as well. Look for that next week!

Oh! Aren't you glad there's so many things to look forward to?

**notice my over-use of exclamation marks in an attempt to make you believe that this really will be ever so much fun.

Everyone is a Princess - Even Ryan (and maybe Mark)

Someone got us all started on the "which Disney princess are you" quiz and I just wanted to put all the outcomes here. I like that we are all pretty much a different princess. I also like that Ryan took the quiz and got the Mulan character traits. I'm not sure if Mark or Cristin took the quiz...can anyone clear that one up? Did I forget anyone here?

Lauren and Ryan: Mulan
- Strong and spirited. You're no one's girly girl; actually you are very determined person with a strong sense of self. Never let go of that! The only thing that equals your sense of self is your family, but the traditions of society can always be bent to protect something or someone you love. (this is funny because of the statement in italics. Ryan is a boy and Lauren is definitely a girly girl)

Corynn: Aurora/Sleeping Beauty - Thoughtful and loving. Authority figures probably have been sheltering you all of your life. Thankfully you're a very tranquil person who is content with what life has given you, but secretly you want to know how the outside world works.

Cristin and/or Mark: Jasmine - Independent and adventurous. You don't want much; just to break out of the guilded cage society has put you in and experience life to the fullest. Following orders isn't really one of your strong points, and you would rather live a life of poverty than being forced into something that you hate. (I like to think that Mark answered this because of the idea that society has put him into a "guilded cage." That darn society.)

Dee and Heidi: Pocahontas - Free-spirited and wise. You have a strong passionate spirit that touches and changes all who know you. The wisdom and common sense that you have is really what guides you through life. Even so, you also have a very playful side that loves adventure and excitement. (I think this one fits them both nicely.)

Me: Belle - Intelligent and kind. Your beauty goes much further than your appearance. Also, you make judgments of people based on their personality and not their looks. Attaining all the knowledge that you can is one of your major goals in life, but you are also a person who can make things happen. (Is this kind of calling me judgmental? At least I can "make things happen," woot!)

List of Things To Do

I've always been a little bit of a dreamer, but tend to lack the confidence needed to propel myself in one direction or another. I remember talking to my mom before I went to London and telling her how proud I was of myself - how long it took me to realize (ie: act upon) that I really can do what I want. I wanted to go to England. What was stopping me? The only thing stopping me was FEAR. I was afraid of telling people I was going and letting them discourage me (which didn't happen). I was afraid of the restrictions of the real world and being able to take time off work (which worked out very well eventually). I was afraid of going into debt (I may have some debt, but it's manageable and not linked to my England trip).

I've also always loved lists. I don't make as many lists as, say, Rory Gilmore, or even as many as my sister does (she makes a lot - and does a good job at crossing things off). I make lists as more of an outline - just to get things out of my head and on paper so I can look at them and make sense of them. Topics of lists include finances, music, books, boyfriends, groceries, homework assignments, etc.

And I've always liked the idea of a pre-made list of goals. I like to look at a huge list of what other people find curious/exciting/interesting and I like to check things off. It reminds me that, yeah, I am pretty cool and sometimes I take risks and they work out and I have some fun stories to share.

I think people can get so bogged down in their day-to-day life/worries that they forget to look around them and be proud of what they've accomplished. It might be annoying, but for my benefit (and others) I try to point out good things in the midst of stressful times. It is really hard to do when you are wallowing in your own self pity - but that's what is challenging and it can make a big difference.

So, I found this while I was a-lurkin' and thought I'd browse through it and see what I've done.** Check out the bold-faced type.

Looking Back

This year I will turn 25 years old. That's right. 25. That used to sound so old, now I have to remind myself that it's still pretty young. Funny how that happens.

I started compiling "Top Five" lists for 2007, but have changed my mind. Instead I decided to look back to the years 1998 and 1988 when I was 15 and 5 years old (respectively). 1998 was an especially rough year for me personally, spiritually, and socially so it will be interesting to think back. Since you all know how much I love listing things, this shouldn't surprise you.

1988

1. I turned 5 years old.
2. My favorite show was the Muppet Babies.
3. I heard a lot of this music thanks to my three older siblings (and probably knew quite a bit of the lyrics thanks to the rule imposed by my brothers stating I could only sing a song if I knew ALL of the lyrics).
4. I loved watching cartoons and Disney movies.
5. My sister and my Grandad were the two coolest people I knew.

1998

1. I was 15 years old and a freshman/sophomore at Calvert High School.
2. I visited my sister in Utah that summer and cut all my hair off (I will try to find a photo)
3. I had recently had my heart broken for the first time.
4. My dad lived in North Carolina, where he worked, and would come home on the weekends.
5. If I had to pinpoint THE time in my life when my mom became my friend and not just my mom it would be this year.
6. I loved sleeping in past Noon on Saturdays and I loved that my mom let me.
7. I saw Titanic three times - by the third time I laughed most of the way through it.
8. I listened to a lot of music.
9. A lot of people I knew and loved died. By a lot I mean about 10. Because of this, my mom still worries about breaking bad news to me, I can't watch City of Angels or listen to Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls, I listened to the same Sarah Maclachlan cd for months straight, I developed a fear of losing certain people, the song "Nearer, My God, to Thee" makes me cry, and I hate funerals.
10. Marin Murray and I became a lot closer. We stopped fighting over stupid things and started to really love having each other around. At least that's how it was for me.
11. I got my Learner's Permit.
12. I loved the movie Armageddon. I saw it four times in four different states. Maryland, Utah, North Carolina and Massachusetts.
13. The Holshousers and The Ostlunds moved into our ward.
14. I watched a lot of sappy TV with my mom. Mostly 7th Heaven and Touched by an Angel. This was not so much by choice as she would be watching it and I would go to talk to her about something and get sucked in by the sappiness and we would both end up crying over whoever it was that was dying or not dying or escaping from abusive households, etc.
15. I also watched a lot of Simpsons, Saturday Night Live, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and anything Adam Sandler made.

2007-2008

1. I will be turning 25.
2. I have traveled to Germany, England, France and throughout most of the United States.
3. I bought my first new car (and got a discount for being a college graduate).
4. I am addicted to music and fell in love with Musicals again (Namely: Hairspray, Across the Universe, Enchanted, Wicked and Rent).
5. I love to Giant Journal.
6. I live in Maryland again.
7. I will soon have 5 nephews and 1 niece - all of whom I love and adore and can't seem to get enough of.
8. After graduating from college, I was reminded how much I love reading for the sake of reading and am now pretty addicted to Barnes and Noble.
9. Our house is being renovated and although it sucks now, it will be awesome when it is finished. I can't believe how different my childhood home has become.
10. I LOVE living near my family. When I was 15, all I could think about was getting OUT of Calvert County. Now I am actually pretty happy living here and can fully appreciate "country" living.
11. I became closer to Krissie this year and I love her ever so much.
12. I still maintain close relationships with my friends from college. When you graduate, you are struck with the fear of leaving everything and everyone you have come to know and love and the knowledge that a lot of people just don't stay close. I'm happy to say that I still talk to most of my college friends on a daily/weekly basis.
13. I am addicted to my cell phone. I can live without a computer or a TV even - but I NEED my cell phone. That is sad.
14. I love The Office, Pushing Daisies, Flight of the Conchords, Psych, Project Runway, Chuck, How I Met Your Mother, and lots of other TV shows.
15. Movies. I could sit around and watch movies all day long. Since it's only eight days into 2008 and I've only seen one new movie, my favorite so far is Juno. But I'm pretty sure that one will stand the test of time. It was funny and amazing and I loved it.
16. I have an actual job that I enjoy with health benefits and paid vacation and a 401K and it's only 15 minutes from my apartment.
17. I have some pretty awesome friends (new and old) who love me no matter how far apart we are.
18. I discovered that I could live in England and be entirely happy.
19. Being an Aunt is one of the best things in the world...especially when you are allowed and able to spoil the children as much as you want.
20. I can handle the "tough" stuff better now. 10 years and a lot of prayer can give anything perspective.
21. I still love to watch cartoons and Disney movies...even if there are no kids around.
22. I love to make things.
23. My mom and I still get sucked in by sappy television, only now it's Lifetime movies, but there's still always someone dying or escaping abuse.
24. Jamie and Corynn are two miracle people in my life. Don't know what I would do without them and don't know how I enjoyed life before them.
25. I blog. I love blogging. I love being able to just put whatever I'm thinking out there and occasionally getting feedback. I love posting things that I think maybe no one will understand and then finding out that many people do understand. I love reading other people's blogs and seeing that we are all very similar. It makes me feel more normal and connected. I especially love how blogging makes keeping in touch with people SO much easier and more personal.

Well, that's the end. Lindsey Sue at 5, 15, and (almost) 25. Who knows what this new year will bring (other than a new nephew, that's pretty much a definite)? Last year certainly had it's surprises.

All I want for Christmas...

I'm listing here, for all to see, but mostly for Lauren so she knows what to tell people when they ask what I want for Christmas (people being Mom and Grandmother). Also, there's a link to my Amazon Wishlist full of movies and cds.

Let me say that this list is probably more for me because I always think of things I would really like to have and then promptly forget them when someone lovingly requests gift suggestions. I am not trying to say with this list "Hey, you people! If you love me you will buy me the following things...if you don't then we can no longer be friends!" I am saying "Here's some suggestions of things I would like to have but would otherwise not buy for myself or might just get them for myself anyhow." So there's my disclaimer. Now on to festive listing fun!!

  • A nice Scrabble board
  • Boggle
  • Barnes and Noble Gift Card
  • Scene It

wow, even now, as I sit here trying to compile this list, I am drawing a complete blank. Things that were in my mind two seconds ago are now gone forever. What a sad, sad Christmas list. I am boring. You know what, I even remember being someplace with Lauren and saying, "I want this for Christmas...tell mom" and I can't remember what the "this" was! ugh.

Okay, well, I will just have to add to this as I think of things. For now, enjoy laughing at my inability to remember the things that I like.

Monday, November 12, 2007

shhh...don't tell. i wasn't tagged.

1. I absolutely love... my family and friends...the ones who "get" me.

2. I don't care if... things don't work according to plan. it just is too time consuming to worry.

3. I like to... have a creative outlet. anything really.

4. I play... more than I probably should.

5. I have a horrible habit of... stressing myself out over stupid things.

6. I love to... draw, eat, sleep, sing, dance, laugh, giant journal, watch tv, be with my friends, cuddle, hug, play, drive, wander, plan, smile, take pictures, etc.

Hello. My Name Is...

...different according to the situation and who is speaking to me.

I have always been a nickname person. People give me nicknames. Some have to do with my actual given name, others are completely random and strange. Some have stuck (whether I liked them or not), others are wistful memories or inside jokes between friends. Some were happily accepted and encouraged by me, others were disposed of as quickly as humanly possible.

I have always liked being a nickname person. My sister has always hated that she is not a nickname person. She is Lauren. When she was 3 and someone called her Laurie (which was my parents intention when they named her Lauren) she looked that person in the eye and said, "My name is Lauren." Thus, her chances for being a nickname person were squashed like some very squashed things (although she does have three nicknames that are used by three specific people, Dad calls her Babydoll, Heidi calls her Lizzie, and Amy calls her L-Train). I never spoke up for myself - I don't think I liked my name enough when I was younger to do so. I just answered to whatever someone decided to call me (that of course does not include nasty names).

Many of my nicknames have awesome origin stories. Many had stories at some point but now we can't remember them. Some nicknames are nicknames of nicknames. I've now written the word "nickname" far too much. So here's a list (with a few simple explanations when needed. I've starred the ones that are used on a regular basis.):

*1. Lin
*2. Linnie
*3. Linds (I really don't like this one but it is most commonly used by people who have just met me.)
4. Linnie the Pooh (Nate and I used to tell each other that we smelled. He came up with this clever little reminder. Even had it engraved into a license plate key chain.)
5. Lindsey Sue
6. Lindsey Susie
*7. Susie
8. Susie Q
9. Miss Susie
*10. Sissie (This is a Lauren thing - we call each other Sissie)
*11. ZiZi (This is what Monkey calls me. It's by far my favorite simply because he's the one saying it.)
12. Scooter (My friend Corynn called me up one day, the phone call went like this:
L: Hello?
C: I'm going to call you Scooter Pie.
L: Why?
C: Because I hate Scooter Pies.
L: Uh...okay?
It's a quote from Scrubs. It eventually just became Scooter.)
13. Illy Dilly (Thanks to my brothers. No idea where it comes from but it caused me endless torment. I knew there was no getting rid of it the day my mom called me that to get me out of bed.)
14. Dill (shortened version of above...Matt didn't even realize he was calling me that.)
*15. Lindle (from Jamie)
16. Lindsey Lou
17. Barney (Not used very long or very much. It was an inside joke with Nate and Ben and Lauren - The boys were Betty and Wilma, Lauren and I were Fred and Barney)
18. Lindsey Loodle Noodle (from Bonnie)
*19. Lilifin (from Krissie. It's "Lin" in double talk)

I wish I could think of one more just to even out the list. haha. but there you have it, a random list just for you.

Just because...

What I was doing ten years ago: I was 14 and a freshman in high school. I've blogged about that one. I was probably miserable. haha.

What I was doing five years ago: That would be 2002? Um, let's see. I was in my third year of college, second year at BYU. Probably still living in Heather Heights with Snappy McGee, Crazy Roommate #8, 342, and Deb. Hanging out with Jeffy and trying not to fail.

One Year ago:
I was working for a company in Orem, living with the Tottens, and preparing to move back home to Maryland. Also, I started blogging. :)

Yesterday: I came into work early so I could babysit Monkey. Found out that Lauren is having a boy. Babysat for four adorable little boys. Got to spend lots of time with Monkey, who was being especially cuddly and cute. Watched How I Met Your Mother. Went to bed happy.

5 snacks I enjoy:
Utz ruffled potato chips w/ taco dip, chocolate covered strawberries, hershey's green mint chip milkshakes, brownies, jello.

5 Things I would do if I
had $100 million: probably pay someone to tell me how to invest so i couldn't spend it all on frivolous things, give some to my parents, buy presents for my nephews and niece, buy a new car, buy a house, buy my Mac. (also pay tithing, but that goes without saying, right?)

5 Places I would love to run away to: England, the beach, Scotland, California, and Italy.

Five TV shows I like:
The Office, How I Met Your Mother, Heroes, Pushing Daisies, America's Next Top Model.

Five things I hate doing:
Working on Mondays, waking up early, washing the dishes, getting my car fixed, doing laundry.

Five biggest joys of the moment:
I'm getting a new nephew, it's Friday, I'm going shopping and to a movie tonight, I have lots of good TV shows patiently waiting for me to view them this weekend, I got paid today.

Excerpts from the 25 Worst Band Names list in Miri's post.

This made me laugh out loud. Oh the imagery!

Band Name: Panic! At the Disco.

The story: Named after the Smiths song, "Panic," which includes a line about a disco burning down. Note that this offers no explanation whatsoever for the exclamation mark/typo.

Why it's ridiculous: Much like their contemporaries in the whine-rock genre, the title utterly fails at being either cute or intelligent, and is instead simply annoying. At least Fall Out Boy is a Simpsons reference. A bad and obvious one, sure, but that has to earn you a little mileage. Panic! At the Disco makes us imagine a bunch of effeminate guys running around a dance floor freaking out because they ran out of eyeliner.

Band Name: Mott the Hoople

The story: When the band regrouped in the late 1960s, their new manager changed their name from Silence to Mott the Hoople, after a novel of the same name about a circus freak.

Why it's ridiculous: First of all, we don't know anyone who's ever read, or even heard of the novel. We asked a professor of mid-20th century circus freak literature if he'd read it, and he punched us in the stomach for making up such a stupid sounding novel. Also, calling anything Mott the Hoople basically begs one to enquire what the hell a Hoople is, for which of course there's no good answer. It's basically the band name version of the joke that goes "You've got some updoc on your shoulder!" Only when the person replies, "What's up, doc?" you say, "I have no idea, something about a circus freak."

Haven't you heard? Lists are all the rage.

Yes, yes they are. It's truer than true.

Megan did a 100 things list to mark her 100th post (happy milestone, Megan!) and Miri was in a listing mood and copied that with a shorter version (50 items to brighten your day). So now I've caught the bug thinking that I need a little boost this week to lift my spirits and keep my thoughts positive in order to get ready for meeting new people and such. What better way than to compile a list of whatever good things pop into my head (which I'm going to cap at 30 for the sake of future listing)? So, enjoy fellow bloggers!

1. Conference was this weekend and it was fantastic.
2. I love the changes I've made on my blog. Color overhauls are nice once in a while.
3. I'm going to the Maroon 5 concert with my Jamikins in one week!!
4. I talked to Megan and Miri at the same time (thank you MSN Messenger) this weekend.
5. Everything Monkey does is adorable.
6. I've started trying to eat healthier and be more aware of what I am eating and I've been doing a fantastic job at it. I'm pretty proud of myself.
7. Having said that, I have never been more tempted to eat an entire bag of Utz potato chips before in my life.
8. We find out on Thursday that Peanut is a girl. If we find out that Peanut is a boy, I will still be utterly and completely thrilled.
9. I got Monkey to shake it while we were waiting in line to pay at Walmart. He's an amazing dancer.
10. Monday Night Suit Up.
11. I've listened to the Hairspray soundtrack countless times and cannot wait for it to come out on DVD. I LOVE that movie.
12. I need new music. New to me, new to everyone, whatever...I have a list of CDs to buy, I'm just too cheap to buy them.
13. I think I have a craft addiction. I can't stop coming up with new projects to work on. It's sad, but I love it.
14. Nothing rhymes with Lindsey.
15. I've been finding a lot of cute dresses lately and have bought two of them.
16. I am currently gathering pieces and accessories for my Halloween costume and I am so excited to see how it will turn out. I love Halloween.
17. Monkey is going to be a monkey for Halloween. Big surprise there, huh?
18. Heroes is the best show ever. More to come on that one.
19. The people I rent from went to Utah for the weekend. On the way home from the airport the mom said to the twin 5 year old boys "someone's going to be really excited to see us when we get home!" referring to their dog (who looks like Wishbone). The boys both replied with, "Lindsey?"
20. I am VERY happy they are home. Their house is too big and it was WAY too quiet with them gone.
21. I bought a mini note pad with a picture of Dwight Schrute and the quote "I am faster than 90% of all snakes". It is sitting on my desk at work.
22. I am going to dinner with my parents, Monkey, and grandparents on Friday.
23. I am coming to Utah in less than a month and it will be glorious.
24. Curt texted me last night and made my day even though it was just a random text convo about a speeding ticket - I needed to be thought of.
25. Megan also texted me about some happy news that made me happy.
26. Mom made deviled eggs last night and they were delish.
27. The cucumbers I've been eating lately have been incredibly fresh and delicious.
28. I love The Office and can't wait to see it this week. Meredith is so creepy.
29. I thought that I was out of my Crystal Light On the Go packets at work but there was one more hiding in the bottom of the box. Thank goodness.
30. I'm going to Giant Journal tonight and that makes me happy.

Okay, so there is my random, shorter than others but still good list. Continue to enjoy!

Those oh so elusive "happy times" of High School

So, after writing my previous entry about the 9th grade me, I realized that not too many good things were included. My mission now is to recall some happy memories of high school (I'll cover my 3 years of HS in general, not just 9th grade). They don't come so easily to mind. In fact, I will probably have to resort to looking through old journal entries and photo albums. But here we go anyway.

The Calvert County Fair. Every year we got a Friday off in October to go to the county fair. This should tell you a lot about where I grew up (also, the county flag has a big ol' tobacco leaf on it, that should tell you even more). I loved going to the fair with my friends. I was never a roller coaster kind of girl - but fair rides were just for me. Just exciting enough but not too high or scary. Also, it was nice to experience the freedom of just walking around with a group of friends.

Walker Texas Ranger.
This comes from my previous post. I hated the show, but my mom and I can still sing the theme song word for word and that makes me happy.

Mono. Maya got mono for two weeks toward the end of 9th grade. I remember hating the two weeks she missed of school, being thankful that it was only two weeks and not longer, and reuniting when she got better just in time for our birthday party (our birthdays are two weeks apart in April). We were so excited to see each other. We painted our nails and listened to music (which we spent a lot of our middle school years doing) and at some point Maya ended up wearing a bra on top of her shirt, a cape, and a lamp shade. I took pictures.

My truck. When I got my license I was kind of given my dad's old truck. It was a white chevy s10 and I loved that truck so much. It was eventually totaled, which is not in the least bit a happy memory - but getting the truck and my license was happy so there ya go.

Hangin' Around. We spent a lot of time at the Giles'. My church friends would all end up there on Saturday nights. We would eat and joke around and play games and watch movies. It was a lot of fun. The BEST times, though, were when the video camera came out. Mike and Matt would record the funniest things after everyone else was asleep. Such good times.

And I quote. I was pretty into the Simpsons and SNL (We're talking Spartans, Mango, Mary Catherine Gallager, etc.). Also Adam Sandler movies. I should probably put in here that I might best be described as a "guy's girl". I can hold my own with a group of guys and was quite often the only girl in the group of guys. This wasn't the "only girl in the group of guys because all the guys wanted to date her" kind of situation but rather the "only girl in the group of guys because she's funny, low maintenance, and knows other girls that we can date" kind of situation. Most of these guys were like brothers to me so I was fine with that in High School. I could, however, kill most of them when it came to quoting the Simpsons, SNL, and Billy Madison. Ben and I especially bonded over these things and will still mention quotes from back then that continue to make us laugh but no one else really gets.

Auntie Lindsey. My first nephew was born when I was 15. Noah was the cutest baby I had ever seen and I fell in love instantly. You all know how much I love being an aunt and all about the subsequent "cutest babies I have ever seen". Noah will be 10 in a little over a month and that just makes me feel old.

In a house by the sea. We spent one week every summer in Cape Cod. It was amazing. I am in love with the beach - this would be my yearly summer fling. Time spent with my family, sometimes Maya would come, sometimes my cousin Stephen would stay the week as well. I loved every trip we took there. Even that one time we were driving up in Daddy's Intrepid and the AC broke. Nothing like listening to the Buffy soundtrack with my Sissie.

Buffy. I just mentioned the Buffy soundtrack and thought, "I really loved this show." That's pretty much all for this one.

HFStival. My first concert was actually the Tibetan Freedom concert in middle school. A girl got struck by lightning around dusk and they called off the rest of the concert just before most of the good bands started to play. We saw DMB and Live and a whole bunch of other crappy bands we didn't care about. BUT, then there was the HFSTIVAL. This concert is now crap and the radio station is defunct, but it used to be amazing. So many bands in one place. If you can overlook the heavy drug and alcohol usage then there were plenty of good times to be had. Such stories to be told from going to this all day concert blow out! But that would take forever.

Okay...well, I think that's long enough. There's a glimpse into some of the happier memories. It was more difficult to write this post, probably because the other one had more to do with my actually personality traits as a high school student and because high school really sucked so there's a lot more material.

looking back

So this idea is from Lili's mom's blog but I've been meaning to do something like this for a while now. Moving back home causes one to think a lot about things that happened in the past and how you've changed as a person. Mostly for me because the last time I lived here was during high school aka the worst three years of my life. Middle School was a fantastic time for me, but 9th, 10th and 11th grades were so unbearable I did everything I could to get out of there early (and succeeded thanks to my amazing mother). Of course there were fun times and happy memories, but when your "job" is to go to school and get good grades and the thought of going to school makes you want to cry uncontrollably and then on top of that things around you seem to fall apart - when you look back several years later, the fun times and happy memories seem few and far between. It's only natural that the traumatic things resonate - those are the things that caused the biggest changes, for good and bad.

So here I go, back to ninth grade.

Doomed from the beginning. My mom got a waiver so I could go to the same high school most of my friends were going to and not the high school my brothers went to. She didn't want to deal with the administration there and I didn't want to deal with the druggies there so it was win win. I'm certain that as much as high school sucked for me, it would have sucked 10,000 times more had I attended that school. Even though I was perfectly aware of that fact at the time, I hated high school the moment I got there. Technically before I got there...that bus ride was pure hell. My future did not look bright.

You gotta have friends. At least I had my best friend Maya. Unfortunately the only class we had together was lunch. We viewed this as a positive since this was the only "class" during which we could actually talk. I also had my church friends - all of whom I had known since birth. We all traveled in somewhat different social circles and we were in different grades, but we spent almost every weekend together gathered at one house or another.

Boyfriend. I started my 9th grade year with a boyfriend. A guy from church I had known for two years and had been "dating" for about a month before school started. Of course this was 9th grade dating - but it was pretty significant for me. He went to the other high school so I saw him on weekends and at mutual and spent a lot of time online or on the phone talking to him. Everything was fine until October when he broke up with me four days before my homecoming dance. He already had a ticket so he still went to my homecoming dance and spent the whole night flirting with another girl. Needless to say, I was never really thrilled to attend another homecoming.

Utter lack of style. I'm a fairly creative person and I liked to look nice for church or for going out on the weekends but school meant nothing to me and I wasn't looking to impress anyone there. This resulted in me wearing the ugliest clothes on the planet (some of which I still own and wear when I'm cleaning/sleeping/sick). I hated going shopping because nothing fit right. My skin was pretty clear so I had no motivation to try to wear makeup (I'm pretty sure Lauren didn't teach me to put on mascara until the following year because I refused to learn). My hair was long and always in a pony tail and I wore pajamas bottoms to school on a regular basis. With socks (that rarely matched) and sandals and an oversized hoodie. Sometimes I wore jeans - usually because my mom made me. I look back at pictures and wince. It was not a good look.

Mommy and me. My dad worked in North Carolina during my high school years. He lived there during the week and would come home every other weekend. Sometimes my mom and I would drive down there. I hated it there and am so happy we did not move. Lauren was still in college, Gordy was living with Leah, and Matt was still home but we didn't see him much. This left me and my mom. I realize I spent a lot of time at her friends houses - their kids were my friends from church and we just naturally congregated at their homes - and now I know how that must have seemed to my mom. But she was the only thing keeping me sane then. She was there every Friday night, waiting for dad. We put on Walker Texas Ranger so it would be on when dad got home then made fun of the theme song and Chuck Norris. She let me sleep past noon on Saturday mornings. She let me cry about school and friends and life in general. She did everything she could to make my life easier during high school. That is why she is still one of my best friends.

Detention. I had my second and last detention in 9th grade (the first was in 6th grade but I don't remember what for). Some friends and I went and got lunch at McDonalds and got caught sneaking back in. After that nothing seemed important enough to sit through detention and make my mom mad at me.

Extracurriculars. I started managing the Field Hockey team. It gave me something to do plus several of my friends from church played on the team. I also took photography and art classes. I took photo so I could walk around during class. Easy grade. But I really fell in love with it. Just another way to let off some steam.

Socializing. I knew a lot of people. Every class had a different "type" of high school student. I was the youngest in my photo class because it was a class mostly for juniors and seniors. I was the oldest in my science and math classes because I really sucked at science and math. The rest of my classes were with people I'd been in classes with since kindergarten. They all had me pegged. I goofed off in science and math but still did alright. I goofed off in photography because that was the point. I would say that I made aquanitances not friends. I saw these people every day because someone decided we all had to be there. we worked on projects because we had to. I'm sure some of them genuinely liked me and thought I was funny when I actually spoke up and was myself - I know I genuinely liked them. But we would never hang out together. Everyone was in a different clique. I really think I just never found a clique. I just floated around from group to group, class to class and did the best I could to survive.

Snobbery (This one is for Hayley). It may be hard for some of you to believe but I was shy. Large groups still intimidate me. I don't like being the center of attention. When I'm with people I am comfortable around then I tend to be more open and natural, but on my own I keep to myself. At church and seminary I was myself. Good or bad, take it or leave it. I spoke up for myself, I answered questions, I sneaked off to take naps when I was too tired, I took charge when asked (still usually reluctantly but at school I would have done whatever I had to do to get out of that responsibility). I did what I could to welcome new girls at church - to help them feel included. Often my mom had to force me to do this and I dreaded every minute of it - but I did it and eventually it was easier. In the stake I knew a few people. Girls and guys my own age who I thought I knew well enough to feel somewhat comfortable at a stake function but I usually still stuck with my ward friends because I had known them my entire life. Still, I tried to be friendly to everyone. I learned later (and really was happy to learn this) that I seemed like a bit of a snob. It's good to hear things like that I think. I know I was the least snobby of our group - but hearing that my shyness and reluctance to participate made me seem like a snob motivated me to be more outgoing in college. I'd rather be humiliated then have people think I was a snob. Sometimes.

I suppose that's all I can think of. Many of these things stayed the same throughout high school. As frustrating as 9th grade was, though, things just went downhill from there. I don't regret missing Senior year. It was all the bad stuff of 10th and 11th grade that helped make me who I am. I toughened up, I took responsibility for things when no one else would, I was supportive, I was the good one. Never in trouble, always responsible. I resented all of those things, but someone had to fill that role. I know that those things are what made me stable, helped me grow spiritually, and ultimately made me comfortable to just be myself.

Hobbies.

First of all, this post is inspired by Amy who i haven't seen in a very long time and that is sad.

Second of all, the word "hobby" sounds weird if you say it enough.

so, here's the definition:
hob·by /ˈhɒbi/ - [hob-ee] –noun, plural -bies.
1. an activity or interest pursued for pleasure or relaxation and not as a main occupation: Her hobbies include stamp-collecting and woodcarving.
2. a child's hobbyhorse.
3. Archaic. a small horse.
—Idiom4. ride a hobby, to concern oneself excessively with a favorite notion or activity. Also, ride a hobbyhorse.

Related forms
hob·by·ist, noun
hob·by·less, adjective

Amy mentioned that she is practically hobbyless. I, on the other hand, have so many hobbies that some often go negelected for months at a time until one of the three things happens: my interest is piqued, I get tired of whatever other hobby I am currently focusing on, or someone invites me to join them in doing that hobby.

There are certain hobbies that I never tire of, but that I must put on the back burner for one reason or another (i.e., money, time, space). Scrapbooking is one of those hobbies. Painting is as well. I love both of these activities...they are probably two of my most favorite things to do. When I paint or scrapbook I find my "zone", I lose track of time, I forget to eat, I turn on some music and I just get lost in the activity and let the creative juices flow. Unfortunately, these are my two most expensive hobbies. Paints and brushes and canvas (or walls) are expensive and messy. Setting up and cleaning up takes a while - you have to wash your brushes with care so they will last. Likewise, scrapbooking supplies are insanely over priced and cleaning up all the bits of paper and ribbon and sticky things and reorganizing your supplies every time you invest time in it is not so much fun. These are the hobbies that need an entire day of commitment, or a weekend. If I'm doing these things, I need to have a place to do them where I can leave the work out, unfinished, to wait for my return. I am not quite in the stage of my life where I have the space to do that (although I do have some space now for scrapbooking which is amazing...i LOVE my new apartment).

So, here is a list of the things I do and why I love doing them (in no particular order).

1. Scrapbooking: Although this takes a lot of time and money, I'm already addicted so there's no turning back now.

2. Painting: Again, time and money (as well as some skill) are required for this one, but I love it for the reasons mentioned above.

3. Drawing: It's amazing what a pencil and paper can do for you. I used to draw constantly - it was more of an impulse than a hobby (something that kept me happy and awake during classes). Now it's a hobby - something I can do anywhere and feel completely relaxed and at peace while still expressing myself.

4. Reading: I'm pretty sure that most of you who read this have the same addiction to books that I have...you all get it.

5. Movies and Music: I wouldn't normally categorize these as hobbies, except that my need for these things borders on addiction. Music makes my world go round - I seek out new stuff, I search for old stuff, I connect people and places with songs. Movies are right up there with books - I love the different people and places and situations they introduce and I love being able to put in a movie and feel happy or sad or grateful or excited or whatever.

6. Giant Journaling: This is a relatively new hobby for me (about a year old), but one that I fell in love with immediately. The beauty of GJ is that it combines all my other hobbies into one. I know...amazing. I can paint, draw, scrap, write, color, whatever! All in one book. In sharing this hobby with others, I try to stress that you don't necessarily need any artistic talent - just the desire to keep some sort of record or the need for an outlet (Amy - this might be good for you...could also create a group of friends through this...check out the website). I have never been consistent in Journal keeping - but this helps with that as well. I now have a pretty good record of the events of the last year of my life. It's amazing.

7. Crocheting: This is a family thing. My Grandma Wriggle taught us all how to crochet as soon as we showed an interest (I was about 11, I believe). My mom crochets like a crazy woman - she is always working on a baby blanket (no exaggeration...always....for the last ten or so years). I am not yet that addicted, but it is an easy, relaxing, relatively inexpensive hobby and can be done anywhere. While watching a TV show or movie, on a plane, in the car for a long drive, etc. Plus, you end up with something useful...potholders or a blanket or whatever.

8. Embroidery: A few years ago, Lauren and I came across this website that has iron on patterns for embroidery on any surface you choose. I used them to make monkey patches for a quilt I made for Monkey when he was born and I use them for making onesies as shower gifts (quick and easy and somewhat cheap). Not for everyone, as it takes some patience, but fun for me.

9. Jewelry Making: Somewhat expensive in the beginning, but once you get all your supplies and a nice collection of beads, you're pretty good to go. It's nice to be able to take an old, broken necklace and transform it into something new. Also, if you hit sales where they are selling somewhat ugly or less than mint condition jewelry you can cannibalize and create a completely new SET to wear for a few bucks. It does take time though. Lots of time, working with little tiny beads. Not for the faint of heart - or those with less than perfect vision really.

Okay, so there you go. The OCD in me wishes I could think of a number 10, but I can't right now...sorry. :) But that's what I spend a lot of my time doing.

Um...the end.
